Reed led her outside, whispering how cute it was that she had Coach wrapped around her finger.

“He is not,” she replied. “He’s just not used to coaching a woman.”

“Yeah, that’s it.” Reed made a face. “Believe what you want, but as possessive as he is of you, he may not stand up and protect you if some of the bigger egos try to intimidate you while I’m gone. You have to show them you’re tough, that you can take the barbs as well as any of the guys. Most of the guys respect you and your abilities, but there are a few who like to push your buttons.”

“Let me guess.” She laughed, holding up a couple of fingers, but her insides tingled that this Godsend cared enough to warn her.

“Give them a run for their money, CJ. Show them who’s boss.” He stopped and touched her arm. “That would light up Coach for sure.”

“How did I get so lucky to have you in my life?”

“There is a reason we ran together in New Zealand, that Coach signed you.” He smiled that calming smile of his. “Remember, I’ll only be gone a week, so hang tough and show them how cool you are. If you need someone, stick close to Kyle.”

“Oh, Reed, I’m going to miss you.” She gave him a quick hug. “You’re more of a big brother than my own flesh and blood.”

“Glad to be of service.” He hugged her back. “Now, let’s go shower up and grab some grub. I don’t know about you, but I’m starving.”

She floated back to her room, feeling for the first time what a family bond felt like.
